SEND & Inclusion
At Ickford School, our priority is to create an inclusive environment where every child is valued, supported and enabled to thrive. Pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) are supported primarily within the classroom through high-quality, inclusive teaching led by the class teacher. Working in close partnership with families and guided by high expectations, we aim to ensure that every child can achieve their full potential and participate fully in school life.
Teaching Assistants work collaboratively with class teachers to provide additional support within the classroom, enabling pupils to make progress in a nurturing and encouraging environment. Where appropriate, the school also works in partnership with external professionals, including Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, the School Nursing Team and other relevant agencies, to ensure timely, appropriate and effective support is in place.
Children’s attainment is considered in relation to their individual starting points, with a strong emphasis on progress and achievement over time. The progress of all pupils is carefully monitored, and teaching and assessment are adapted to meet individual needs and support each child’s learning journey.
Pupils with the greatest needs are supported by skilled and experienced staff within the classroom, and wherever possible, barriers to learning are addressed through adapted teaching rather than withdrawal from lessons. Any targeted interventions are carefully planned, specific and time-limited, and are delivered in addition to high-quality classroom teaching. When interventions take place outside the classroom, they are scheduled thoughtfully to minimise disruption and ensure continuity across the curriculum.
Equality
The school is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff and visitors, in line with our legal duties under the Equality Act 2010. We work to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, and to promote equality of opportunity regardless of age, sex, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or socio-economic background.
We aim to provide an inclusive environment in which all pupils can thrive, ensuring that the physical environment, teaching and learning resources and quality of teaching are accessible and supportive of equal opportunities. Particular care is taken to ensure that pupils with disabilities are not disadvantaged, and reasonable adjustments are made where necessary in line with our anticipatory duty.
All staff and those working under the authority of the school are aware of their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and receive appropriate guidance and training. Policies, procedures and practice are reviewed regularly to ensure compliance and to promote an inclusive, supportive learning environment for all.
